Wilfried Nancy insisted he had no concerns about losing his job, claiming, “We are very near to changing our fortunes,” despite sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a convincing setback against Rangers.
Another Meltdown Leads to Old Firm Disaster
The home side were ahead their oldest rivals at the break but a disastrous second period let Rangers to pull level on points with the reigning league title holders. The former MLS manager, who was brought in in December, has now overseen six setbacks in his first eight matches.
“The board and I are united with the board,” stated Nancy.
Questioned about his own future, Nancy said: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on working out methods to get the team to be good on small moments.
Supporters' Anger Outside Parkhead
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – towards the board and manager – in their hundreds at Parkhead. Club directors are reportedly likely to return to Martin O’Neill, who steered the club during a interim spell before Nancy was hired, should a change be made.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. Yet in stating that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am giving up. No. What I mean the turnaround is near, extremely close to reverse our form.”
“Really, Really Close”
Nancy continues to cling to the fact Celtic can perform strongly for one half at a time. In fact, were it not for poor finishing they could have been more than 1-0 up. “I saw enough aside from the fact that we haven’t scored a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but it's important to stay objective.
“The level we had at certain moments was really, really, really high. This is the reality. I wouldn't say that if it was not the case. But that’s why, regarding outcomes, I mentioned we've seen this before. That’s why I said that we are nearly there to things turning around. Currently: the fine margins.”
“I saw many, many good things that we did, once more. But now is sustaining it. My narrative would be different if it was not the case. Therefore I am convinced the team can to fix this.”
Röhl’s Cautious Stance
Danny Röhl played down talk of a championship push in spite of what appeared to be a statement victory. “Step by step, and we can really build up momentum,” he said. “The belief in the team is immense.”
