Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
