Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
