Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
