Strong winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters housing Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Provides Little Respite from Harsh Elements

While a ceasefire has been active since October, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the sufficient shelter necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," stated a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the event.

Family members on that day began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population live in makeshift shelters because their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of shelter materials are entering Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says over 440 individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The authority keeps detailed fatality records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and forty girls – had been lost their lives after the truce began due to military operations, including drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented incidents where sufficient information had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is expected to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "So what the world now calls quiet would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the winter months. It’s the third winter after the war involving Israel and Hamas started on 7 October 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.

The local health authority says over 71,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
