The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, did not confirm this decision immediately after his victory in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he hails from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
