Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.
The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
